How many wive’s tales do you know from your parents or grandparents? Any favourites? Here are two that we all wish would come true magically:

  • Itchy palms mean that you’re about to receive a lump sum of money (bring on the money!)
  • Eating bread crust would make your hair curly (bring on the savings on hair curlers and hair dressers!)

However, funny tales aside, there are some myths that often pass for hair loss facts, and could cost you time, money, stress… and your hair. Let’s imagine that we have 2 boxes – one with hair loss facts and one with wive’s tales – so let’s get tossing:

SHAVING YOUR HEAD MAKE THE HAIR GROW THICKER

This might not be the worst inconvenience for men, but it’s often quite the opposite for ladies. If you’ve walked around with your shaved head when you were little, know that your mum had the best intentions at heart, but she was mistaken.

It’s a myth or merely an illusion. Because all the hairs will be growing back at the same time, from the scalp, and the hair is thicker at the base, it gives the illusion of more hair. However, once it grows in length it will be just as thick (or thin) as it was before.

Let’s toss it in the wives’ tales box.

EVERYDAY USE OF SHAMPOO CAUSES HAIR LOSS

Hair loss facts or wive’s tales box?

Whilst shampooing disturbs your hair’s PH and might make it drier and easier to break, it certainly won’t damage your hair follicles. Here is important to differentiate between hair breakage and hair loss. If you want to keep your hair healthy and shiny, do keep the shampoo use down to 3-4 times a week. However, when it comes to losing your hair, don’t even worry about how often you shampoo, it’s a wives’ tale – toss it in the box.

USING THE HAIR DRYER CAUSES HAIR LOSS

Just as the shampoo myth, the hair dryer has no impact on developing a hair loss condition. It might dry your hair and cause breakage, but it won’t damage your hair follicles. I know what you’re wondering – all those times you walked out of your house with frizzy hair….

Another one for the wives’ tales box.

WEARING A CAP WILL CAUSE HAIR LOSS

Gentleman, rest assured that you can wear as many hats and caps as you please, you won’t go bald because of it – it’s just a good old wives’ tale.

BRUSHING YOUR HAIR WILL MAKE IT GROW FASTER

It’s quite the opposite. Brushing excessively causes breakage, especially on wet hair. However, in terms of actual hair loss, and hair follicles damage, brushing has nothing to do with it.

Luckily, you can stop worrying about these myths, they are not real hair loss facts and living them won’t do anything to stop hair loss. You’re better off getting a professional diagnosis and focusing on a treatment plan .
