Finasteride is a prescription-only hair loss medication. It’s widely known under the generic brand name of Propecia, but the actual medication is called Finasteride (and top tip – you will pay less for the same if you buy Finasteride instead of the branded one).
Finasteride belongs to a group of medicines called 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and has been used to treat hair loss since 1990.
To test Finasteride’s effectiveness, researchers conducted a five-year medical trial to identify the long-term effects of the medication, as well as any short-term effects or results. After five years, the results shown were extremely positive.
42% of men who took Finasteride experienced hair growth in areas where they were becoming bald and another 48% noticed that their hair loss had ceased and that no more hair had fallen out.
Overall, 90% of the men taking the clinical trial experienced positive results.
Not only did the five-year clinical trials involving Finasteride conclude that it is a successful hair loss solution for men with male pattern baldness, but also that it improves the overall condition of their hair, which became thicker and stronger.
Finasteride works as a long-term method of decreasing the effect of DHT *on hair follicles. It has a high success rate in those with mild to moderate hair loss but may need to be taken for several months before any effect is seen.
*DHT stands for the hormone dihydrotestosterone. Genetic baldness is caused by a disorder that causes the hair follicles to become sensitive to DHT. As a result, they shrink, weaken and eventually die, causing hair loss.
If you take one tablet a day of Finasteride, you should expect to see results after 3 months of treatment. However, in some cases, results could take a little bit longer to show.
Only stop to take Finasteride if you’ve taken it for over 12 months without results.

Side effects are very rare when taking Finasteride.
However, as with any type of medication, some side effects can occur.
Studies show that about 1.5% of men taking Finasteride have a risk of experiencing nipple tenderness or rashes, and a reduced sex drive.
Dutasteride is the active ingredient in the medication Avodart. An alternative to Finasteride; the 0.5mg soft capsule is taken daily to treat male pattern baldness.
Please note: Dutasteride is not currently licensed in the UK for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
Minoxidil, also known under the brand name of Regaine, is a UK-licensed hair loss treatment for men and can be purchased without a prescription. The medication is scientifically proven to promote hair growth for men suffering from male pattern baldness. In a recent study, 60% of men that took Minoxidil daily for 48 weeks saw a significant increase in hair coverage. Minoxidil is known to be the second best hair loss treatment for men after Finasteride.
Minoxidil can help to foster hair regrowth for men suffering from male pattern baldness. However, it was proven to work best for:
