What is Dutasteride?
Dutasteride is the active ingredient of the medication Avodart and has become popular as an alternative to Finasteride for Male Pattern Baldness.
It was originally developed to treat prostate enlargement and is chemically similar to Finasteride. In several clinical trials, Dutasteride has been shown to be more effective in treating MPB.
It inhibits 5-Alpha Reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The main difference between Finasteride and Dutasteride is that the latter inhibits both type I and type II of this enzyme, making Dutasteride more effective.
Although Dutasteride is available as an approved treatment for hair loss in countries such as Japan it is not currently a licensed treatment in the UK.
Who can take Dutasteride?
Dutasteride should be used by adult men only, for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
Women and children should not use this medication, and pregnant women should take special care not handle any broken or crushed tablets as it can affect the genital growth of unborn male foetuses. While you are taking Dustateride, small traces of the drug will be found in your semen so you should avoid exposing female partners to it by using a condom during sex.
You should not take Dustateride tablets if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to any of listed ingredients.
How to take Finasteride tablets
You should swallow 1 tablet daily whole with water, with or without a meal. Do not break or crush the tablets. Try to take these at the same time every day: before going to bed, for example.
How quickly will I see results?
Dutasteride tablets need to be taken regularly for at least 3 months to see a benefit. They need to be taken regularly to maintain healthy hair growth.
Once you stop taking Dutasteride, any hair growth experienced is generally lost within 12 months of stopping taking the tablets
