What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia). It works by decreasing the amount of the male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) produced by the body.

DHT causes the hair follicles on the scalp to shrink until they can no longer foster healthy hair growth.

By blocking the creation of DHT, Finasteride lowers the overall levels of DHT in the body, which allows for normal hair regrowth and decreases overall hair loss on the scalp.

Who can take Finasteride?

Finasteride should be used by adult men only, for the treatment of male pattern baldness.

Women and children should not use this medication, and pregnant women should take special care not to handle any broken or crushed tablets as it can affect the genital growth of unborn male fetuses. While you are taking a Finasteride tablet, small traces of the drug will be found in your semen so you should avoid exposing female partners to it by using a condom during sex.

You should not take Finasteride tablets if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to any of the listed ingredients.

How to take Finasteride tablets:

Your packet will be a blister pack containing biconvex film-coated tablets. Please note, product packaging may differ from the image above.

You should swallow half a 5mg tablet three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).

With or without a meal. Try to take these at the same time every day: before going to bed, for example.

How quickly will I see results?

Finasteride tablets need to be taken regularly for at least 3 months to see a benefit. They need to be taken regularly to maintain healthy hair growth.
Once you stop taking Finasteride, any hair growth experienced is generally lost within 12 months of stopping taking the tablets.

Is Finasteride the same as Propecia?

Finasteride is a generic version of the branded medication Propecia. It works exactly the same way but it is available at a lower cost.

Can you get finasteride without a prescription?

Finasteride is a prescription-only medication in the UK. It isn’t suitable for everyone and a doctor needs to assess whether you can take it. It is only appropriate for the treatment of male pattern baldness and it won’t benefit you if you suffer from a different type of hair loss.
