Finasteride

Finasteride is a prescription-only hair loss medication. It’s widely known under the generic brand name of Propecia, but the actual medication is called Finasteride (and top tip — you will pay less for the same if you buy Generic Finasteride instead of the branded one).

Finasteride belongs to a group of medicines called 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and has been used to treat hair loss since 1990.

Are Finasteride Results Proven?

To test Finasteride’s effectiveness, researchers conducted a five-year medical trial to identify the long-term effects of the medication. After five years, the results shown were extremely positive:

  • 42% of men who took Finasteride experienced hair growth in areas where they were becoming bald
  • 48% noticed that their hair loss had ceased and that no more hair had fallen out
  • Overall, 90% of the men taking the clinical trial experienced positive results

How Does Finasteride Work?

Finasteride works as a long-term method of decreasing the effect of DHT on hair follicles. It has a high success rate in those with mild to moderate hair loss but may need to be taken for several months before any effect is seen.

DHT stands for the hormone dihydrotestosterone. Genetic baldness is caused by a disorder that causes the hair follicles to become sensitive to DHT. As a result, they shrink, weaken and eventually die, causing hair loss.

How Quickly Does Finasteride Work?

If you take one tablet a day of Finasteride, you should expect to see results after 3 months of treatment. However, in some cases, results could take a little bit longer to show. Only stop taking Finasteride if you’ve taken it for over 12 months without results.

Side Effects

Side effects are very rare when taking Finasteride. However, as with any type of medication, some side effects can occur. Studies show that about 1.5% of men taking Finasteride have a risk of experiencing nipple tenderness or rashes, and a reduced sex drive.

Dutasteride

Dutasteride is the active ingredient of the medication Avodart and has become popular as an alternative to Finasteride for male pattern baldness.

It was originally developed to treat prostate enlargement and is chemically similar to Finasteride. In several clinical trials Dutasteride has been shown to be more effective in treating MPB.

It inhibits 5-Alpha Reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The main difference between Finasteride and Dutasteride is that the latter inhibits both type I and type II of this enzyme, making Dutasteride more effective.

Dutasteride is a 0.5mg capsule taken daily to treat male pattern baldness.

Please note: Dutasteride is not currently licensed in the UK for the treatment of male pattern baldness.

Topical Finasteride & Minoxidil

A topical solution combining Finasteride and Minoxidil for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. The topical formulation of Finasteride might have more of a localised effect than oral Finasteride, so systemic side effects may be avoided. The concentration of active ingredients are standardised at 0.1% finasteride and 5% minoxidil, equivalent to 1 mg finasteride and 50 mg minoxidil per 1 ml of solution.

Custom compounds are available. These products do not contain Propylene Glycol.

Supplied in a 100ml bottle. The daily dosage is 1ml to treat male pattern baldness.
