Clinical approach

A thorough diagnostic process

During consultations, Rebecca takes a detailed history covering medical background, family history, lifestyle, diet, and any recent changes that may be relevant. She carries out a thorough scalp examination — both visual and microscopic — to assess scalp health, hair density, pattern of loss, and other diagnostic indicators.

In most cases, Rebecca can provide a diagnosis and structured treatment plan. Where appropriate, she may recommend further investigations such as blood tests — and in rare situations, a biopsy — to ensure underlying causes are not missed. Rebecca works closely with the onsite doctor when prescription treatment is required, and provides tailored guidance on topical treatments, scalp care routines, supplements, and practical lifestyle adjustments.

Lived experience

Clinical objectivity, genuine empathy

What distinguishes Rebecca is her personal understanding of hair loss. Having alopecia areata herself, she knows the emotional impact first-hand. Her approach combines clinical objectivity with genuine empathy — she doesn’t just understand the science, she understands how it feels.

Where medical treatment isn’t the right route (for example in certain autoimmune cases), Rebecca can refer to trusted wig specialists, hair replacement providers, private dermatologists, and support networks. She also writes regularly about hair loss and speaks at wig workshops.

Frequently asked questions

What does a trichologist actually do?
A trichologist diagnoses hair and scalp conditions, identifies underlying drivers (medical, hormonal, nutritional, lifestyle), and recommends a treatment plan. They don’t prescribe drugs, but they can refer you to a doctor or surgeon if that’s the right next step.
How is this different from seeing a GP?
A trichologist has specialised training in hair and scalp and uses microscopic scalp examination, which most GPs don’t. We work alongside your GP and the surgical team where helpful.
What happens in the consultation?
Detailed history (medical, family, diet, lifestyle), visual and microscopic scalp examination, diagnosis, and a written plan. About 60 to 90 minutes.
Can I have a transplant after seeing Rebecca?
Yes. Many patients see Rebecca to understand the underlying cause first, then decide on the right combination of medical and surgical options with the team.
Is video consultation as good as in-person?
In-person allows microscopic scalp examination. Video works well for an initial assessment, follow-ups, or patients outside Nottingham. We will tell you honestly which is right.
