PRP for Hair Loss: What the Evidence Actually Says

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy involves drawing a small amount of a patient's blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, and injecting the resulting plasma into the scalp. The theory is that concentrated growth factors stimulate dormant hair follicles and improve the scalp environment for hair growth.

It sounds compelling. The reality is more complicated.

The evidence problem

For male androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), the clinical evidence for PRP is weak. Studies are small, inconsistent, and poorly controlled. We don't offer PRP as a treatment for male pattern hair loss because we don't believe the evidence supports charging patients £300 a session for it. If you're a man with typical pattern baldness, your money is better spent on treatments with a robust evidence base: finasteride, dutasteride, or minoxidil.

Where PRP may have a role

The picture is different for women with complex or diffuse hair thinning, where the causes are more varied and the treatment options more limited. In these cases, where conventional medications haven't achieved the desired result, PRP may be worth considering as part of a broader treatment approach. The evidence remains limited, but the risk profile is low and the alternatives are fewer.

We offer PRP selectively, following an assessment, for women where we believe it may genuinely contribute to their treatment. We won't recommend it where we don't think it will help.

What it involves

Each session takes 30 to 60 minutes. A small blood sample is taken, spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma, and injected into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles. There is minimal discomfort and no recovery time required.

Sessions are priced at £300. We'll give you an honest assessment after reviewing your medical questionnaire of whether we think PRP is appropriate for your situation before recommending it.
