How sildenafil works

Side effects

Sildenafil is well tolerated by most men when taken as directed. Most side effects are mild and short-lived.

• Headache (often mild, tends to resolve within 2-4 hours)

• Facial flushing
• Indigestion or heartburn
• Nasal congestion

Who should not take sildenafil

Sildenafil is not safe for everyone. Do not take it if you:

• Take any nitrate medicine (GTN spray, isosorbide, amyl nitrite, "poppers"). Combined use can cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure
• Take riociguat or other guanylate cyclase stimulators
• Have had a heart attack, stroke, or serious heart-rhythm event in the last 6 months
• Have unstable angina, severe heart failure, or uncontrolled high or low blood pressure
• Have severe liver disease
• Have a hereditary eye condition (retinitis pigmentosa)
• Have previously had priapism or sickle-cell disease
• Are under 18 or female (sildenafil is not licensed for these groups for ED)

Drug interactions to disclose

Tell your prescriber if you take any of the following, because doses may need adjustment:

• Alpha-blockers (for blood pressure or prostate):needs time-spacing
• Ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole (raise sildenafil blood levels significantly)
