Side effects
Topical dutasteride delivers the drug directly to the scalp with lower systemic absorption than oral dutasteride, though systemic effects can still occur, particularly at higher strengths (0.1 to 0.2%). Dutasteride has a longer half-life than finasteride, so any effects take longer to resolve after stopping.

Warnings and precautions
- PSA lowering: Dutasteride can artificially lower Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test results by around 50%. If you have a PSA test in future for prostate cancer screening, tell your GP you are taking topical dutasteride so the reading can be doubled for interpretation.
- TrichoSol® base: The propylene glycol free, low-alcohol vehicle reduces the scalp stinging and dryness commonly reported with standard dutasteride solutions.
- Post-finasteride syndrome: If you have previously stopped oral or topical finasteride due to persistent sexual, mood or physical effects, disclose this on the questionnaire before starting dutasteride.
- Concurrent DHT-blocking treatment: Do not start topical dutasteride alongside oral dutasteride, oral finasteride, or topical finasteride without prescriber guidance. Combining increases systemic exposure and side-effect risk.
- Fertility planning: If you and your partner are actively trying to conceive, discuss with your prescriber before starting.
- Longer half-life: Any side effects from dutasteride take longer to resolve after stopping than they would with finasteride, because dutasteride has a much longer half-life (weeks versus hours).
