Description
Minocream® Minoxidil Cream for Hair and Beard (50g)
Prescription minoxidil cream, compounded fresh in the UK. Unlike liquid solutions, cream stays where you put it, absorbs cleanly, and does not drip. Ideal for beard growth (where a solution would run into unwanted areas) and for anyone who dislikes the tacky feel of standard alcohol-and-glycol scalp solutions.
How Minocream works
Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener. Applied to the skin, it improves microcirculation around hair follicles and prolongs the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle. On the beard, this produces thicker, denser, more even coverage over months. On the scalp, it produces the same follicle-thickening effect as a liquid solution.
Cream delivers the same active ingredient as a solution, but sits on the skin as a moisturising film rather than a fast-drying liquid. That means less drip, less waste, and better targeting of exactly where you want the drug to work.
Available strengths
- 5%: the standard men's strength; the recommended starting point for beard growth
- 10%: higher strength for scalp non-responders after several months at 5%
- 15%: maximum practical strength for confirmed non-responders
How to apply
- Wash and dry the target area (scalp or beard)
- Apply a pea-sized amount to the target area once or twice daily as instructed
- Massage gently into the skin with clean fingertips
- Wash your hands after application
- Allow the cream to absorb for 15 to 20 minutes before styling or shaving
Consistency matters more than technique. Missing days slows progress, particularly in the first cycle.
What to expect
- 4 to 8 weeks: initial shedding is normal (yes, even on the beard). It resolves
- 3 to 4 months: visible new hairs appearing in previously sparse areas
- 6 to 12 months: full effect. Coverage plateaus and is maintained with continued daily use
- On stopping: new hairs gained during treatment are gradually lost over several weeks
Side effects
Cream is generally well tolerated because it avoids the alcohol and propylene glycol that cause irritation with standard minoxidil solutions.
Common (roughly 1 in 10)
- Mild redness or dryness at the application site, most common in the first 2 weeks
- Initial hair shedding in the first 4 to 8 weeks. Temporary and normal
Uncommon (roughly 1 in 100)
- Hair growth in areas of contact transfer (if you handle the cream and then touch your face, arms or partner's skin)
- Contact dermatitis at the application site
Rare (less than 1 in 1,000)
- Lightheadedness on standing (very unusual at cream doses)
- Palpitations or racing heart (very unusual at cream doses)
When to seek urgent medical advice
- Signs of allergic reaction: facial or lip swelling, difficulty breathing, rash
- Persistent chest pain, palpitations or breathlessness
Who should not use Minocream
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Do not apply to broken skin or inflamed areas; wait for the skin to heal first
- Known allergy to minoxidil
- Under 18
Cream vs solution vs foam
- Cream (Minocream): best for beard growth (stays put, no drip), and for scalp users who dislike sticky solutions. Absorbs cleanly, moisturising rather than drying
- Solution (TrichoSol® base): best for full-scalp coverage, spreads easily, faster application. Some users find it slightly sticky
- Foam (5% OTC brands): alcohol-heavy, dries very quickly, best for people who style hair straight after. Not offered in cream form and not available above 5%

Frequently asked questions
What is Minocream?+
Minocream is a minoxidil cream for both scalp and beard application.
Can I use minoxidil cream for beard growth?+
Yes, minoxidil cream can promote facial hair growth when applied to the beard area.
How is cream different from foam or solution?+
Cream provides a more moisturising application that stays in place better.
How do I apply Minocream?+
Apply a pea-sized amount to the target area once or twice daily. Massage gently into the skin. Wash hands afterwards. Allow to absorb before applying anything else.
What strengths does Minocream come in?+
Minocream is compounded to order in strengths from 5% up to 15% minoxidil. Most beard users start at 5%. Scalp users may go higher if they have plateaued on a standard solution.
Are there side effects with minoxidil cream on the beard?+
The main effects are local: mild redness, dryness or itching in the treated area, most often when starting. Systemic effects are uncommon at the doses absorbed through a small area of beard skin, but any lightheadedness or racing heart should be reported.
Can women use Minocream?+
Yes, for scalp application. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Facial use in women is not typical because it can promote unwanted facial hair.
Can I return this item?+
Prescription and custom-compounded medicines cannot be returned once dispensed under UK pharmacy regulations. Non-prescription items may be returned within 14 days if unused and in their original packaging. See our returns policy at hairrepairclinic.co.uk/returns-policy for full details.
