Description

FINASOL®: Topical Finasteride (TrichoSol™) 100ml

Finasol® is our custom topical finasteride solution, designed to reduce scalp DHT and slow hair loss without the need for oral treatment. Made in the UK using a TrichoSol™ base, it delivers finasteride (0.01%–0.2%) with minimal irritation and no propylene glycol.

Ideal for men who want a topical option or prefer to avoid oral treatment. A version combined with minoxidil is also available if you want a dual approach.

Each 100ml bottle lasts up to 3 months. Apply 1ml once daily to a clean, dry scalp. Most users notice results within 3–6 months with consistent use.

Topical finasteride reduces DHT at the follicle, helping to prevent miniaturisation and maintain existing hair.

Custom strengths available.

Ingredients: Finasteride (0.01%, 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%) in TrichoSol™ base.

Side effects

Topical finasteride delivers the drug directly to the scalp, which produces lower systemic absorption than the 1mg oral tablet. Side effects at the follicle level are the most common; systemic effects are less likely than with oral finasteride but not zero.

Common (roughly 1 in 10)

  • Mild scalp irritation, redness or itching after application
  • Localised dryness or flaking (usually resolves once the scalp adapts)

Uncommon (roughly 1 in 100)

  • Reduced libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Changes to ejaculation volume

Rare (less than 1 in 1,000)

  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Mood changes (incidence unclear, still reported)
  • Persistent sexual effects after stopping treatment

Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000)

  • Reduced semen quality or male infertility, worth discussing with your prescriber if you are actively trying to conceive
  • Testicular pain or discomfort
  • Changes in liver function

When to seek urgent medical advice

  • Signs of allergic reaction: facial or lip swelling, difficulty breathing, rash
  • Significant mood change or thoughts of self-harm
  • Unusual breast lumps or nipple discharge

Not suitable for women, particularly during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you notice any side effect, contact your prescriber before stopping so the decision can be reviewed properly.

Warnings and precautions

  • TrichoSol® base: The propylene glycol free, low-alcohol vehicle reduces the scalp stinging and dryness commonly reported with standard finasteride solutions.
  • Post-finasteride syndrome: If you have previously stopped oral or topical finasteride due to persistent sexual, mood or physical effects, disclose this on the questionnaire so your prescriber can review carefully.
  • Concurrent DHT-blocking treatment: Do not start topical finasteride alongside oral finasteride, dutasteride, or topical dutasteride without prescriber guidance. Combining increases systemic exposure and side-effect risk.
  • Fertility planning: If you and your partner are actively trying to conceive, discuss with your prescriber before starting.

Combining FINASOL with other hair loss treatments

FINASOL is a compounded bottle, so you can add other actives to the same 100ml formula in the configurator rather than buying a second product.

  • Add minoxidil to the bottle (2% to 15%, prescriber approved) for growth stimulation on top of the DHT block. This is the standard male dual action combination. Available as an add on when you configure FINASOL.
  • Add tretinoin to the bottle (0.01% or 0.025%) if you know you are a slow minoxidil responder. Tretinoin raises sulphotransferase activity in the scalp, which can improve minoxidil response. Available as an add on when you configure FINASOL.
  • Want a wider active palette? Our Custom Topical Solution compounds finasteride with minoxidil, tretinoin and additional actives (melatonin, spironolactone, niacinamide, vitamin E, azelic acid, cetirizine and more) in one 100ml bottle, reviewed by a UK prescriber.
  • Want a stronger DHT block? DUTASOL is the natural escalation. Dutasteride blocks both Type I and Type II 5-alpha reductase (roughly 90 to 98% DHT reduction versus 70% for finasteride). Switch to DUTASOL if FINASOL plateaus, not alongside.
  • Prefer oral finasteride instead of topical? See Finasteride 1mg tablets for the traditional daily oral option.

Frequently asked questions

What is FINASOL and how does it work?+

FINASOL is our topical finasteride solution, compounded in the TrichoSol® base by Fagron. Applied to the scalp, it blocks DHT at the follicle level while minimising systemic absorption compared with oral finasteride.

What is TrichoSol®?+

TrichoSol® is a low-alcohol, propylene glycol free water-based compounding vehicle developed by Fagron for topical hair loss treatments. It gives smooth, even absorption into the scalp with less irritation than standard finasteride solutions.

Does topical finasteride have fewer side effects than oral?+

Studies suggest topical finasteride results in lower systemic DHT reduction, potentially reducing sexual side effects.

How do I apply FINASOL?+

Apply 1ml to the affected areas of the scalp once daily, preferably in the evening.

Can I use FINASOL with other hair loss treatments?+

Yes. FINASOL can be combined with oral minoxidil, ketoconazole shampoo, or oral finasteride under prescriber guidance. Topical minoxidil and tretinoin are not separate purchases: both can be added directly to your FINASOL bottle in the configurator, so you get everything in one 100ml formula.

How long does FINASOL take to show results?+

Most users see reduced shedding within 2-3 months and visible regrowth from 4-6 months. Full results are typically judged at 12 months of consistent daily use.

Can women use FINASOL topical finasteride?+

Post-menopausal women may use topical finasteride under prescriber supervision. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding because finasteride can affect a male foetus, and women of childbearing age should discuss risks and contraception with a prescriber before starting.

Does FINASOL work equally well on the hairline and the crown?+

Topical finasteride reduces scalp DHT wherever it is applied. Regrowth is generally strongest at the crown and mid-scalp, and slower and more limited at a receding hairline, mirroring the pattern seen with oral finasteride.

What happens if I miss a day of FINASOL?+

One missed day makes no meaningful difference. Just resume the next evening. Regular missed days will slow progress because DHT suppression needs to be maintained daily to be effective.

Can I return this item?+

Prescription and custom-compounded medicines cannot be returned once dispensed under UK pharmacy regulations. Non-prescription items may be returned within 14 days if unused and in their original packaging. See our returns policy at hairrepairclinic.co.uk/returns-policy for full details.

Can I combine FINASOL with topical minoxidil or dutasteride?+

Yes for minoxidil, no for dutasteride. Add minoxidil directly to your FINASOL bottle in the configurator (no need for a second product). That is the classic dual mechanism approach: one blocks DHT, one stimulates growth. Do NOT combine topical finasteride with topical or oral dutasteride: our compounded formulas allow one DHT blocker per bottle, and combining fin plus dut offers no meaningful additional benefit while increasing side-effect risk. If you want a stronger DHT block, switch to DUTASOL rather than adding it.

How much does FINASOL cost in the UK?+

FINASOL starts from £65 for a 100ml bottle, roughly three months of daily use at 1ml per day (around £22 per month). Price varies with the strength you choose and any optional add-ons like minoxidil or tretinoin. Free UK prescriber review and free UK delivery are included.
