What is generic bimatoprost eyelash serum?

Generic bimatoprost 0.03% is the unbranded equivalent of Lumigan and Latisse, containing the same active ingredient at the same concentration. Lumigan and Latisse are the two prescription brand names for bimatoprost; generic bimatoprost is clinically identical and typically more affordable.

Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostaglandin analogue. Originally licensed for glaucoma, it was found to produce a consistent and striking side effect: longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. It is now the most clinically proven ingredient for eyelash growth.

How bimatoprost grows lashes

Eyelashes cycle through three phases: growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and rest (telogen). Most lashes spend only a short time in anagen, which is why they stay short. Bimatoprost works by binding to prostaglandin receptors in the hair follicle, which:

• Extends the anagen (active growth) phase, so each lash grows for longer before it sheds

• Increases the proportion of follicles actively growing at any one time

• Stimulates melanin production in the follicle, darkening the lash shaft

The effect is cumulative. Lashes resting at the start of treatment enter the growth phase as the cycle turns, so results build progressively over 12-16 weeks.

Generic vs branded: Lumigan and Latisse

All three contain bimatoprost 0.03% and produce identical clinical results. The difference is brand and price only. Lumigan is the original ophthalmic brand (Allergan); Latisse is the same molecule repositioned for the US cosmetic market. Generic bimatoprost uses the same active ingredient, manufactured to the same pharmaceutical standards, at a lower cost. In the UK, most prescribers use either Lumigan or generic bimatoprost interchangeably for eyelash growth.

Results timeline

• 4-8 weeks: visible lengthening and thickening begins

• 12-16 weeks: full results, lashes at maximum length and density

• Ongoing use: results maintained with continued nightly application

• On stopping: lashes gradually return to pre-treatment state over several weeks

How to apply

Apply once daily in the evening to clean, dry skin:

• Remove contact lenses; wait 15 minutes before reinserting after application

• Place a single drop onto a clean applicator or fine brush

• Draw along the base of the upper lash line only, as you would a thin line of eyeliner

• Blot any excess immediately below the lash line

• Do not apply to lower lashes directly (they receive treatment by contact transfer)

• Do not place drops directly in the eye

Side effects

Bimatoprost is well-tolerated when applied correctly to the upper lash line rather than into the eye.

Common (roughly 1 in 10)

• Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) at the application site. Usually reverses when treatment stops

• Mild eye redness or irritation, particularly if solution reaches the eye directly

Uncommon (roughly 1 in 100)

• Itching or dryness of the eyelid margin

• Darkening of the eyelid skin

Rare (less than 1 in 1,000)

• Permanent iris pigmentation (darkening of the coloured part of the eye), mainly reported in glaucoma patients using bimatoprost as a direct eye drop over many years. The risk with correct upper lash-line application is very low

• Significant eye pain, blurred vision or new sensitivity to light

Generic bimatoprost vs Lumigan vs Latisse vs OTC serums

Every UK eyelash growth serum containing bimatoprost 0.03% shares the same active. The differences are manufacturer, licensing and price. How they compare:

• Generic bimatoprost 0.03% (this product): bioequivalent generic sildenafil manufactured by UK licensed generics makers. Same clinical file as Lumigan, at a lower monthly cost. £38 for a 3ml bottle, 4 to 6 weeks of nightly use.
• Lumigan 0.03% (Allergan / AbbVie): the original UK MHRA licensed brand. Licensed for glaucoma since 2002, prescribed off-label for eyelash growth. Same active as generic bimatoprost at the same 0.03% strength, at a slightly higher price for the branded packaging. See our Lumigan Eyelash Serum.
• Latisse (Allergan / AbbVie, US brand): the same bimatoprost 0.03% from the same manufacturer group, US FDA licensed specifically for eyelash growth since 2008. Not sold in the UK. • OTC eyelash growth serums (RevitaLash, LiLash, GrandeLASH, others): contain isopropyl cloprostenate or similar cosmetic prostaglandin derivatives, NOT bimatoprost. Clinical outcome from generic bimatoprost 0.03% is identical to Lumigan and Latisse. Choose generic if price is your priority, Lumigan if you prefer the original branded packaging, and avoid US Latisse imports since they are the same drug at higher cost.

Clinical evidence for bimatoprost on eyelash growth

Bimatoprost 0.03% is the most rigorously evidenced eyelash growth serum on the market. Every generic 0.03% product (this one included) relies on the same clinical evidence base as branded Lumigan and Latisse, because the active and dose are identical.

• Yoelin et al 2010 (US Phase III, 278 patients over 16 weeks): 78% of treated patients had at least a one-grade improvement on a 4-point global eyelash assessment scale, versus 18% on placebo. Statistically significant gains in length (24%), thickness (45%) and darkness (18%).
• Wester et al 2010 (130 patients): measurable eyelash length gain from week 4 onwards, sustained through week 16. Return towards baseline by 8 to 12 weeks after stopping.
• Peplinski and Albiani Smith 2004: the original observation in glaucoma patients on bimatoprost that led to the eyelash growth studies. Longer, darker lashes were noted as an incidental effect of the licensed glaucoma treatment.

All evidence is at 0.03% concentration applied once nightly to the upper lash line. Higher strengths do not exist as licensed products, and are not recommended.

Regulatory status in the UK

• Bimatoprost is a prescription only medicine (POM) in the UK at all strengths. There is no over the counter bimatoprost. Anything sold OTC as an "eyelash growth serum" contains a cosmetic prostaglandin derivative, not bimatoprost.
• Generic bimatoprost 0.03% is MHRA licensed under the same clinical file as Lumigan, for glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Eyelash growth is off-label prescribing (as it is for Lumigan too).

Storage and shelf life

• Store at room temperature, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
• Do not refrigerate. Bimatoprost eye drops are formulated for room temperature storage.
• Sealed bottle expiry is on the manufacturer label (typically 24 to 36 months from dispensing).
• Once opened, discard after 4 weeks. Bimatoprost eye drops are dispensed sterile, but the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) plus applicator hygiene only protect against bacterial growth for 4 weeks after first use. A 3ml bottle used nightly lasts roughly 4 to 6 weeks anyway, so most customers use one bottle inside the open window.
• Do not share bottles or brushes between people.

Excipients: what is in generic bimatoprost 0.03%

Active ingredient: bimatoprost 0.3mg/ml (0.03% w/v). Standard UK generic bimatoprost eye drop solution contains, in addition to the active:

• Benzalkonium chloride (BAK) as the preservative, at 0.005%. This is what keeps the sterile solution safe for repeated use over the 4 week open period.
• Sodium chloride, sodium phosphate as tonicity and buffer agents so the drop matches natural tears.
• Citric acid for pH adjustment.
• Purified water as the solvent.

How to apply bimatoprost for eyelash growth

The application technique for eyelash growth differs from the glaucoma technique. Getting this right maximises lash effect and minimises the risk of periorbital skin darkening.

1. Remove eye makeup and clean the upper lash line. Contact lenses out. Skin dry.
2. One drop on a sterile eyeliner brush. One drop is enough for both upper lids.
3. Apply once nightly to the UPPER lash line only, in a single stroke as if applying eyeliner. Do NOT drip directly into the eye. Do NOT apply to the lower lash line.
4. Blot any excess that runs onto the skin below the lash line with a tissue. Wash your hands after application.
5. Reinsert contact lenses at least 15 minutes after application, not immediately.
6. Use a fresh applicator brush each night if using disposable brushes.
