What is Lumigan (bimatoprost 0.03%)?

Lumigan is a prescription solution containing bimatoprost 0.03%, a synthetic prostaglandin analogue. Originally licensed for glaucoma, it was found to produce a consistent and striking side effect: longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. That effect is now its most common off-label use in the UK.

The US brand Latisse contains the same active ingredient at the same concentration. Lumigan is the original prescription brand available in the UK; both are clinically identical.

How bimatoprost grows lashes

Eyelashes cycle through three phases: growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and rest (telogen). Most lashes spend only a short time in anagen, which is why they stay short. Bimatoprost works by binding to prostaglandin receptors in the hair follicle, which:

• Extends the anagen (active growth) phase, so each lash grows for longer before it sheds
• Increases the proportion of follicles actively growing at any one time
• Stimulates melanin production in the follicle, darkening the lash shaft

The effect is cumulative. Lashes resting at the start of treatment enter the growth phase as the cycle progresses, so results build steadily over 12-16 weeks.

Lumigan vs Latisse

Both contain bimatoprost 0.03% and are made by Allergan. The only difference is commercial: Lumigan is the ophthalmic (glaucoma) brand; Latisse was later created specifically for the US cosmetic lash market. In clinical practice they produce identical results. In the UK, Lumigan is the standard prescription formulation for lash growth and is typically more cost-effective.

Results timeline

• 4-8 weeks: visible lengthening and thickening begins
• 12-16 weeks: full results, lashes at maximum length and density
• Ongoing use: results maintained with continued nightly application
• On stopping: lashes gradually return to pre-treatment state over several weeks

Clinical trials report up to 25% increase in lash length, 106% increase in thickness, and a significant increase in lash darkness.

How to apply

Apply once daily in the evening to clean, dry skin:

• Remove contact lenses; wait 15 minutes before reinserting after application
• Place a single drop onto a clean applicator or fine brush
• Draw along the base of the upper lash line only, as you would a thin line of eyeliner
• Blot any excess immediately below the lash line
• Do not apply to lower lashes directly (they receive treatment by contact transfer)
• Do not place drops directly in the eye

Side effects

Bimatoprost is well-tolerated when applied correctly to the upper lash line rather than into the eye.

Common (roughly 1 in 10)

• Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) at the application site. Usually reverses when treatment stops
• Mild eye redness or irritation, particularly if solution reaches the eye directly

Uncommon (roughly 1 in 100)

• Itching or dryness of the eyelid margin
• Darkening of the eyelid skin

Rare (less than 1 in 1,000)

• Permanent iris pigmentation (darkening of the coloured part of the eye), mainly reported in glaucoma patients using bimatoprost as a direct eye drop over many years. The risk with correct upper lash-line application is very low

• Signs of allergic reaction: facial or lip swelling, difficulty breathing, rash
• Significant eye pain, blurred vision or new sensitivity to light

Lumigan vs Latisse vs generic bimatoprost vs OTC eyelash serums

Every UK eyelash growth serum contains bimatoprost 0.03% as the active. What differs is the manufacturer, the licensing, the applicator packaging, and the price. Here is how they compare:

• Lumigan (Allergan / AbbVie, UK licensed, this product): the original UK MHRA licensed brand. Licensed for glaucoma since 2002, prescribed off-label for eyelash growth by applying the same drop to the upper lash line rather than the eye. £40 for a 3ml bottle, 4 to 6 weeks of nightly use.
• Latisse (Allergan / AbbVie, US brand): identical bimatoprost 0.03% to Lumigan, from the same manufacturer group. Latisse is the US FDA licensed brand specifically for eyelash growth (hypotrichosis) since 2008. Ships with sterile single-use applicator brushes. Not sold as Latisse in the UK. US retail typically $150 to $180 per month.

• OTC "eyelash growth serums" (RevitaLash, LiLash, GrandeLASH, others): these contain isopropyl cloprostenate or dechloro-dihydroxy-difluoro ethyl prostenylamide (prostaglandin analog cosmetic derivatives), NOT bimatoprost. The evidence base is much thinner, effects are milder, and the pricing is often higher per month than prescription bimatoprost. Available without a prescription because they contain cosmetic-grade derivatives rather than the licensed drug.

For most UK customers wanting the strongest evidence-backed eyelash growth serum at a reasonable price, Lumigan is the default. Generic bimatoprost is the cheapest UK option with identical clinical effect. Latisse imports are unnecessary given Lumigan is the same drug from the same maker.

Clinical evidence for Lumigan on eyelash growth

Bimatoprost 0.03% is the most rigorously evidenced eyelash growth serum on the market, with 15+ years of Phase III trial data behind it. Key trials that inform how we prescribe:

• Yoelin et al 2010 (US Phase III, 278 patients over 16 weeks): 78% of treated patients had at least a one-grade improvement on a 4-point global eyelash assessment scale, versus 18% on placebo. Statistically significant gains in length (24%), thickness (45%) and darkness (18%).
• Wester et al 2010 (130 patients): bimatoprost 0.03% produced measurable eyelash length gain from week 4 onwards, sustained through week 16. Return towards baseline by 8 to 12 weeks after stopping treatment. This is why bimatoprost is a maintenance product, not a course.
• Peplinski and Albiani Smith 2004 (original observational report in glaucoma patients): was the observation that patients on bimatoprost for glaucoma were growing longer eyelashes. Led directly to the eyelash growth trials and to the licensed Latisse indication in the US.
• Real-world results with Lumigan follow the same pattern as Latisse trials. Same active, same dose, same clinical outcome. The Lumigan brand does not have separate published trials for eyelash growth because it is the same drug, prescribed off-label, using the same evidence base.

Regulatory status in the UK

• Lumigan 0.03% is MHRA licensed in the UK for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, since 2002. See the MHRA licence at the Electronic Medicines Compendium.
• Use for eyelash growth is off-label in the UK. The MHRA has never granted a specific eyelash growth licence for bimatoprost in the UK, unlike the US FDA. Off-label prescribing is legal and common practice when the prescriber judges it appropriate for the patient.
• Bimatoprost is a prescription only medicine (POM) in the UK for all uses. There is no over the counter bimatoprost in the UK. Anything sold OTC as an "eyelash growth serum" contains a cosmetic prostaglandin derivative, not bimatoprost.

Storage and shelf life

• Store at room temperature, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
• Do not refrigerate. Bimatoprost eye drops are formulated for room temperature storage, and refrigeration changes solution properties.
• Sealed bottle expiry is on the manufacturer label (typically 24 to 36 months from dispensing). Do not use after the printed expiry date.
• Once opened, discard after 4 weeks. This is important: bimatoprost eye drops are dispensed sterile, but the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) plus applicator hygiene are only enough to protect against bacterial growth for 4 weeks after first use. A 3ml bottle used nightly on the upper lash line lasts roughly 4 to 6 weeks, so most customers use one bottle inside the 4 week window and discard any residual.
• Do not share bottles or brushes between people. Bimatoprost is a prescription medicine and sharing risks cross-contamination.

Excipients: what is in Lumigan 0.03%

Active ingredient: bimatoprost 0.3mg/ml (0.03% w/v). The rest of the sterile eye drop solution is:

• Benzalkonium chloride (BAK): the preservative, at 0.005%. This is what keeps the sterile solution safe for repeated use over the 4 week open period. Some people are BAK-sensitive; alternatives include preservative-free bimatoprost formulations such as Eyreida.
• Sodium chloride and sodium phosphate as tonicity and buffer agents (so the drop matches the salt content and acidity of natural tears).
• Citric acid monohydrate to adjust pH.
• Purified water as the solvent, making up the rest.

The full ingredient list is on the dispensing label. If you have a documented BAK allergy or severe dry eye syndrome, tell your prescriber; a preservative-free bimatoprost such as Eyreida may be better tolerated.

Detailed application technique for eyelash growth

Bimatoprost applied for eyelash growth is a different technique from the glaucoma technique. Getting this right maximises lash effect and minimises side effect risk (particularly the periorbital skin darkening some people develop from over-application to the lower lid).

1. Remove eye makeup and clean the upper lash line. Skin around the eye should be dry. Remove contact lenses.
2. One drop on a sterile eyeliner brush. One drop is enough for both upper lids. Do not squeeze the bottle to release a second drop; one is the correct dose.
3. Apply once nightly to the UPPER lash line only, in a single stroke as if applying eyeliner. Do NOT drip the bimatoprost directly into the eye. Do NOT apply to the lower lash line or below the lash line: this is where periorbital pigmentation tends to develop.
4. Blot any excess that runs onto the skin below the lash line with a tissue. Wash your hands after application.
5. Reinsert contact lenses at least 15 minutes after application, not immediately.
6. Use a fresh applicator brush each night if using disposable single-use brushes. Some customers reuse a fine liner brush, cleaning it between uses; either approach is fine as long as the brush is not shared and is not obviously contaminated.
