Side effects
Topical minoxidil is well tolerated by most people, particularly in the TrichoSol® base by Fagron, which avoids the propylene glycol and high-alcohol content that causes irritation with standard 5% solutions.
Common (roughly 1 in 10)
- Mild scalp irritation, redness or itching after application
- Initial hair shedding in the first 4 to 8 weeks. Temporary and a normal sign the treatment is working
Uncommon (roughly 1 in 100)
- Localised facial hair growth by contact transfer if solution reaches the forehead, temples or cheeks. Careful application avoids this
- Contact dermatitis, more common with propylene glycol-based products than with the TrichoSol® base
Rare (less than 1 in 1,000)
- Lightheadedness on standing (very unusual at topical doses)
- Palpitations or racing heart (very unusual at topical doses)
When to seek urgent medical advice
- Signs of allergic reaction: facial or lip swelling, difficulty breathing, rash
- Persistent chest pain, palpitations or breathlessness
- Sudden significant ankle or leg swelling

What is topical minoxidil in TrichoSol®?+

What strengths of topical minoxidil are available?+
Available in 2%, 5%, 10%, 12.5% and 15%. Most people start at 5%. Higher strengths are typically used by non-responders after several months at a lower dose. The 15% strength contains a small amount of ethanol.
I have a propylene glycol allergy. Is this a good option?+
Yes. Standard minoxidil solutions contain propylene glycol, a common cause of scalp itching, redness and dryness. The TrichoSol® base is propylene glycol free and low-alcohol, so it is well tolerated by people who have reacted to standard 5% solutions.
How long until I see results with topical minoxidil?+
Reduced shedding typically shows in 2 to 3 months. Visible regrowth is judged at 4 to 6 months and full effect at 12 months. Some users see an initial shed in the first 4 to 6 weeks as follicles synchronise, which is a normal early sign the treatment is working.
Do I need to shake the bottle before use?+
A gentle inversion is enough. The TrichoSol® base is a stable water-based solution rather than a suspension, so aggressive shaking is not required.
