What is bimatoprost eyelash serum?

Bimatoprost eyelash serum is a prescription topical treatment applied to the upper lash line once daily to produce longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. In the UK it is most commonly prescribed under the brand name Lumigan; in the US it is sold under the cosmetic brand name Latisse. Both contain the same active ingredient: bimatoprost 0.03%.

Unlike over-the-counter lash serums (peptide or conditioning products), bimatoprost is a licensed prescription medicine. It works through a specific biological mechanism at the hair follicle level, which is why the results are more dramatic and consistent than anything available without a prescription.

How does bimatoprost grow lashes?

Eyelashes, like all hair, cycle through three phases:

• Anagen (active growth): lashes typically spend only 30-45 days here, which is why they stay short
• Catagen (transition): 2-3 weeks
• Telogen (resting, then shedding)

Bimatoprost binds to prostaglandin F2α receptors in the hair follicle. This does two things: it extends the anagen phase (so each lash grows for longer before it falls out) and it increases the proportion of follicles in active growth simultaneously. The melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) in the follicle are also stimulated, which darkens the lash shaft as it grows.

The effect is cumulative. Lashes that are in the resting phase at the start of treatment will enter anagen as the cycle turns, so results build progressively over 12-16 weeks rather than appearing overnight.

What results can you expect?

Clinical trials of bimatoprost for eyelash growth reported:

• Up to 25% increase in lash length
• Up to 106% increase in lash thickness
• A significant, measurable increase in lash darkness

Most users notice a visible difference within 4-8 weeks. Full results take 12-16 weeks. The effect is maintained with ongoing nightly use. If you stop, lashes gradually return to their pre-treatment state over several weeks as the cycle resumes its normal length.

Lumigan vs Latisse: is there a difference?

No clinically meaningful difference. Both Lumigan and Latisse contain bimatoprost 0.03% and are manufactured by Allergan. The distinction is commercial: Lumigan was the original ophthalmic brand (for glaucoma); Latisse was later developed as a dedicated cosmetic lash product for the US market.

In the UK, Latisse is not widely available. Lumigan is the standard prescription used by UK prescribers for eyelash growth and is typically more affordable. The results are identical.

Bimatoprost vs over-the-counter lash serums

OTC lash serums (containing peptides, biotin, or keratin conditioners) improve the appearance of existing lashes by reducing breakage and adding shine. They do not alter the growth cycle and produce no measurable increase in length or density in clinical studies.

Bimatoprost changes the biology of lash growth at the follicle level. It is the only topical treatment with robust clinical evidence for producing genuine increases in lash length and density, and the only one that requires a prescription precisely because it is pharmacologically active.

Side effects and safety

Bimatoprost is well-tolerated when applied to the upper lash line correctly. The key side effects to know about:

• Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) at the application site: common, usually reverses when treatment stops
• Eye redness or mild irritation: usually mild and reduces with careful application technique
• Iris pigmentation: a rare, potentially permanent darkening of the iris (the coloured part of the eye). This was reported mainly in glaucoma patients using bimatoprost as an eye drop directly in the eye over years. The risk with lash-line application is very low, but using the correct technique (upper lash line only, blot excess) minimises it further

Bimatoprost is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have active eye inflammation.

How to apply bimatoprost to lashes

Apply once each evening, to clean dry skin:

1. Remove contact lenses before starting; wait 15 minutes after applying before reinserting
2. Place a single drop of solution onto a clean, thin-tipped applicator or fine brush
3. Draw along the base of the upper lash line only, as you would apply a thin line of eyeliner
4. Blot any excess that collects on the skin below the lashes
5. Do not apply directly to the lower lash line; lower lashes receive treatment by natural contact transfer when you blink
6. Do not place drops directly in the eye

Consistency matters more than technique in the early weeks. Missing nights slows results, particularly during the first cycle.
