How to Grow a Fuller Beard – Treatments That Work
Patchy beard growth is one of the most common cosmetic complaints men have - and one of the least talked about. Whether you have gaps in the cheeks, a thin moustache, or growth that simply never filled in, there are treatments with genuine evidence behind them. Here's what actually works.
Looking for scalp treatments instead? See our [complete guide to stopping hair loss →]
Why beards grow patchy
Beard density is mostly genetic. Facial hair follicles respond to androgens differently from scalp hair - which is why some men go bald on top while growing thick beards, and others have full heads of hair and patchy cheeks. Age matters too: many men's beards continue to fill in well into their thirties.
If your beard has thinned suddenly or in defined circular patches, that may be alopecia barbae - an autoimmune condition - and is worth a conversation with us or your GP before trying growth treatments.
Minocream 5% Minoxidil Hair & Beard Cream
Most minoxidil comes as a liquid, which runs and drips on facial skin. Minocream is a thick cream containing 5% minoxidil (50mg per 1g), making it far easier to apply accurately to the beard area without it migrating where you don't want it.
How to use: apply to clean, dry skin, spreading and massaging into the areas you want to treat. Do a patch test first.
Results: visible improvement can begin within a few months; full results take up to a year. Like all minoxidil treatments, gains are maintained only while you continue using it.
Side effects: mild shedding in the early weeks is normal and temporary. Some men experience dryness, redness or irritation - facial skin is more sensitive than scalp, which is another reason a cream applied precisely beats a liquid applied approximately.
Minoxidil Hair Regrowth Treatment
Minoxidil is an FDA approved hair loss treatment, suitable for both men and women. It is a topical treatment, also known as Regaine, and it typically comes in 2% and 5% strengths. However, there are extra-strength varieties available to treat patients with more severe hair loss.
Minoxidil is designed to both stop hair loss in its tracks and encourage regrowth. During initial trials, the treatment was found to improve hair loss in 60% of the men who used it.
How to use, Before using Minoxidil, it's important to ensure your scalp and hair are completely dry. Simply apply the prescribed amount directly onto the area being treated with the applicator, working from the center outwards. Once it's been applied, wash your hands immediately.
Results, You can expect to start seeing significant improvement after around 4 months. Minoxidil is a temporary treatment option, with results only lasting as long as you use the product.
Risks and side effects, It's common to experience a little shedding in the initial first few weeks of use. There's a small risk of skin irritation, redness and flaking.
Pharma Hermetic HRP Spray Lotion
A natural alternative for men who can't or don't want to use minoxidil. The spray applies to beards, eyebrows and hair, either as a standalone treatment or alongside the full HRP programme. Its blend of active ingredients is designed to increase density and thickness of existing hair.
How to use: apply daily to clean, dry skin and massage in. Leave 8 hours before washing.
Side effects: generally well tolerated. As with anything applied to facial skin, patch test before first use.
Derma Rollers And Derma Stamps
Your Secret Weapon for Hair Regrowth
Micro-needling uses a small roller or stamp covered in fine surgical needles to create microscopic punctures in the skin, triggering the body's healing response and boosting circulation to the follicles. Research on scalp hair shows it meaningfully improves minoxidil results, and the same combination is widely used for beards.
How to use: roll each area 10-15 times in one direction only, with moderate pressure - pressing harder doesn't work better. Don't apply minoxidil immediately after rolling; leave 24 hours to avoid stinging and excess absorption.
Beard oils, balms and vitamin gummies condition the hair you have - they don't create new growth. Nothing rubbed in from a high-street shelf changes follicle behaviour. If a product promises a new beard without an active ingredient behind it, save your money.
Where to start
If you're unsure which approach suits your skin and growth pattern book a 15-minute chat with an advisor costs nothing and saves months of trial and error.
