Female Hair Loss Cheat Codes: A UK Straight-Talking Plan
Most of what gets marketed to women for hair thinning is designed to sell products, not stop thinning. If you want the honest version, here are the five things that actually work, plus a short list of what to skip.
1. The Foundation (Finasteride or Dutasteride)
Traditionally marketed to men, these remain the strongest defence against hormonal thinning for women who are not pregnant, not planning a pregnancy, and not breastfeeding. Over 30 years of data support them. Fads cannot touch what these treatments do at the follicle.
2. Topical Spironolactone
A targeted DHT blocker often used as a first line treatment for women. Applied directly to the scalp, it protects follicles from miniaturisation without the systemic effects of oral medication. Use once or twice daily. Our topical spironolactone (SPIROSOL) ships in a 100ml bottle, which typically lasts around three months. Most competitor topicals ship 30ml.
3. The Growth Booster (Minoxidil 5%)
The most effective way to thicken the hair shaft and keep follicles in the growth phase. Think of it as fertiliser. It works best paired with a DHT blocker, which protects the roots while minoxidil pushes the growth.
4. The Absorption Tool (Microneedling)
A serious upgrade for anyone using topical treatments. A 0.5mm dermaroller can be used 3 to 5 times a week to improve absorption. A 1.0mm roller is used every other week for deeper stimulation. Do not use both on the same day.
5. Scalp Health (Ketoconazole Shampoo)
Once or twice a week is enough. Ketoconazole calms inflammation, provides a mild anti-androgen effect and creates a better environment for growth. A healthy scalp is a better growth substrate. Simple as that.
Reality Check
Skip the "beauty" solutions. Gummies, rosemary oil and miracle serums do not stop genetic thinning. Many patients spend months on PRP and trending fads with little to no result. Consistent use of proven medical treatments is what works, and starting sooner protects more of your hair.

Frequently asked questions
Is finasteride safe for women?+
Finasteride and dutasteride are prescribed to women who are not pregnant, not planning a pregnancy and not breastfeeding. A UK prescriber will assess suitability based on your answers to our online questionnaire.
What is topical spironolactone and how is it different from oral spironolactone?+
Topical spironolactone is applied directly to the scalp. It blocks DHT at the follicle without the systemic hormonal effects of the oral version. That makes it a common first line choice for women with pattern thinning.
Does minoxidil work for women?+
Yes. Minoxidil is effective for female pattern hair loss and helps thicken the hair shaft. Results are strongest when combined with a DHT blocker.
Do hair gummies and rosemary oil work for female hair loss?+
They do not stop genetic thinning. They may support general hair condition, but they do not replace the treatments that actually address the hormonal cause.
