Dutasteride for Hair Loss: How It Works, Who It Is For, and What to Expect
A powerful 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that may be more effective than finasteride for treating male pattern baldness.
What Is Dutasteride and How Does It Work?
If you are looking for a strong and effective medication to treat your hair loss, you may want to consider dutasteride. Dutasteride, also known by its brand name Avodart, is a drug that can shrink the enlarged prostate in men and also prevent and reverse male pattern baldness. Dutasteride belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. These drugs block the enzyme that converts testosterone, a male hormone, into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair loss.
By lowering the levels of DHT in the body, dutasteride can stop the hair follicles from shrinking and stimulate new hair growth. Dutasteride comes in the form of oral capsules, usually with a dose of 0.5 mg per day.
Dutasteride is one of the best hair loss treatments for men, along with finasteride and minoxidil. However, some studies suggest that dutasteride may be more effective than finasteride and minoxidil, as it can block more DHT and has a longer-lasting effect.
Benefits and Risks
Benefits
- Slowing down or stopping the progression of hair loss
- Increasing the density and thickness of hair
- Improving the appearance and confidence of the user
Potential Side Effects
- Erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculation problems
- Breast enlargement or tenderness
- Depression, mood swings, and anxiety
- Allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing
- Increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer
These side effects are rare and usually mild, but they can be serious in some cases. Always disclose your full medical history in our online questionnaire so the reviewing prescriber can confirm dutasteride is appropriate, and report any adverse reactions. Dutasteride is not approved by the FDA for hair loss and is only prescribed off-label. Dutasteride is also not suitable for women, especially pregnant women, as it can cause birth defects in the fetus.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
Results vary by individual, but generally it takes about three to six months to notice the first signs of improvement. It may take up to a year or more to see the full effect of dutasteride on hair growth and hair loss prevention.
During the initial months, you may experience some shedding of thin hairs, but this is normal and temporary. It means that the old hairs are being replaced by new and stronger ones.
How to Use Dutasteride
Take one 0.5 mg capsule of dutasteride once a day, with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole; do not chew or open it. Avoid touching or handling a capsule that is broken or leaking, as the contents may harm your skin or eyes. Store the capsules in a cool, dry place, away from children and pets.
Some people find that taking dutasteride three times a week is enough to achieve good results, while others need to take it every day. Your prescribing pharmacist will confirm the right dosage and frequency for you. Keep in mind that dutasteride is a long-term treatment and that you need to take it continuously to maintain its benefits. If you stop taking dutasteride, your hair loss may resume within six to twelve months.
Combining Dutasteride with Other Treatments
Dutasteride can be combined with other hair loss treatments, such as minoxidil, finasteride, or hair transplant, to enhance the results and address different aspects of hair loss. List every medication and supplement you are taking in the medical questionnaire so the reviewing prescriber can check for interactions before approving the prescription.

Frequently asked questions
Is dutasteride better than finasteride?+
For hair loss, dutasteride is more potent. It blocks both type 1 and type 2 forms of 5 alpha reductase (finasteride only blocks type 2), reducing scalp DHT by roughly 90 percent versus 70 percent. In head to head trials at 6 months, dutasteride produced about 1.7 times more regrowth than finasteride 1 mg. The trade off is a longer half life and a slightly higher rate of side effects in some studies.
What are the side effects of dutasteride?+
Similar profile to finasteride: sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile difficulty) affect a small percentage of users in trials, with mood changes reported less often. Because dutasteride stays in the body longer (half life around 5 weeks), any side effects can take longer to clear. The UK prescriber screens for contraindications including history of prostate cancer in the family and family planning.
How long does dutasteride take to work?+
Reduced shedding by month 3, visible regrowth between 4 and 9 months. Dutasteride tends to work faster than finasteride because it suppresses DHT more deeply. Stopping reverses the gains over 6 to 12 months as DHT returns to baseline.
Is dutasteride safe for hair loss?+
Used off label for hair loss in the UK (licensed only in South Korea and Japan for this indication, and in the UK for benign prostatic hyperplasia). The safety profile in hair loss dosing (0.5 mg daily) mirrors finasteride. Long term cohort data is shorter than finasteride but no consistent serious adverse signal has emerged. UK prescribers typically reserve it for men who plateau on finasteride or want more aggressive regrowth.
Can dutasteride regrow hair?+
Yes, in areas where follicles are still alive but miniaturised. In one trial of men with mild to moderate hair loss, dutasteride 0.5 mg produced an average increase of 88 hairs per square centimetre after 6 months, compared with 60 hairs for finasteride. It cannot regrow hair in fully bald areas where follicles are gone; that requires a hair transplant.
Is dutasteride licensed for hair loss in the UK?+
No. In the UK, dutasteride is licensed only for benign prostatic hyperplasia, so its use for hair loss is off label. This is legal and common: UK prescribers regularly prescribe medications outside their licensed indication when evidence supports it. Hair Repair Clinic only dispenses dutasteride after prescriber review of the online questionnaire.
